Neck Pain in Active Adults: Causes, Treatment, and Prevention

Are you an active adult struggling with neck pain? Whether you're a dedicated cyclist, an enthusiastic pickleball player, or just someone who loves staying fit, neck pain can be a real pain in the... well, neck. As a physical therapist who's treated numerous cases of neck pain, I'm here to share some insights that could help you get back to your active lifestyle.

What Causes Neck Pain in Active Adults?

Neck pain isn't just about sleeping in an awkward position (although who hasn’t gotten that “crick” in the neck at some point?). Here are some common causes:

  1. Poor Posture: This isn't just about being hunched over. Asymmetrical hip motion and strength, holding your trunk leaning to one side, or lacking range of motion or stability in one shoulder can all contribute to neck issues.
  2. Muscle Imbalances: our bodies adapt to what we demand from them. Sometimes we lack resilience because we train with poor patterns, or we train so long in a pattern we lose the ability to get out of it when it is not needed. Because of this, muscle imbalances are underlying causes for overuse injuries
  3. Overuse: Repetitive motions in sports like pickleball can strain your neck over time if your body is not moving properly or your tissues are not prepared for the amount of load you are placing on them.
  4. Prolonged Positions: Cyclists, swimmers, and desk jockeys often experience neck discomfort from looking up for extended periods.
  5. Whiplash: Common in contact sports or after a fall.
  6. Age-Related Changes: As we age, our cervical spine naturally undergoes some changes. These changes don’t have to hurt if you are able to maintain ROM and strength.
  7. Stress: Tension from stress often manifests pain in the neck and shoulders, but it is a whole body experience!

Understanding these causes is crucial in addressing your neck pain effectively.

Our Holistic Approach to Treating Neck Pain

At Activated Movement Physical Therapy, we don't just treat the symptoms; we look at the whole picture. Here's how we approach neck pain treatment:

  1. Comprehensive Assessment: We start by examining not just your neck, but your entire body mechanics. Sometimes, the root cause of neck pain is in your shoulders, upper back, or even your feet!
  2. Manual Therapy Techniques: These hands-on methods help restore mobility to stiff joints and relax tense muscles. It's like a reset button for your neck and upper body.
  3. Postural Correction: We address asymmetries in your posture, from hip imbalances to shoulder instabilities. This isn't just about "sitting up straight" - it's about training your body to find its optimal alignment.
  4. Targeted Strengthening: We design exercises to strengthen the deep neck flexors and other supporting muscles throughout your body. This is crucial for long-term pain relief and injury prevention.
  5. Mobility Exercises: Gentle stretches and range-of-motion exercises help improve flexibility and reduce stiffness.
  6. Education: We empower you with knowledge about your condition and teach you self-management techniques.
Success Story: A Holistic Approach to Lasting Relief

Let me share a story close to home - my wife's experience with neck pain. As an active person who chases 4 young children, she occasionally struggles with persistent neck pain.

By taking a whole-body approach, we found poor postural positioning of her pelvis and poor left shoulder range of motion and strength. Imbalances in these areas were causing compensations up the kinetic chain, ultimately affecting her neck.

We addressed these underlying movement problems, starting from her feet and working our way up. This included:

  1. Foot strengthening exercises to improve her foundation
  2. Hip mobility and stability work
  3. Left shoulder stabilization
  4. Upper back and left rib cage mobility exercises
  5. Targeted neck strengthening

The result? She consistently feels better when we address all of these areas comprehensively. Her neck pain has significantly reduced, and she's able to enjoy her activities without constantly reaching for ibuprofen.

This experience reinforces our belief in treating the whole body, not just the site of pain. It's a testament to how interconnected our body systems are and how a holistic approach can lead to lasting relief.
